삶 속에서 스포츠는 중요한 문화이다

 

지금은 스포츠 전성시대이다. 전 세계에서 열리는 각종 스포츠 경기는 인터넷과 방송을 통해 실시간으로 생중계되고 있고, 일반 대중들은 다양한 생활체육을 일상에서 즐기고 있다. 지역사회를  중심으로  다양한 스포츠 동호회가 활발하게 운영되고 있으며, 직접 경기장을 찾아 관람하는 이들도 남녀노소를 구분 것 없이 기하급수적으로 늘어나고 있는 추세이다. 이러한 스포츠 열풍은 우리나라뿐만 아니라 세계적인 현상이고,  월드컵과 올림픽 등 각종 국제대회가 중요한 역할을 했다고 볼수 있다.

현대사회에서 스포츠는 하나의 문화가 되었다. 이처럼 스포츠가 대중의 일상에서 중요하게 인식되는 데에는 몇 가지 이유가 있다.

첫째는 무엇보다 산업으로서 스포츠의 확산이다. 스포츠 산업의 규모가 커지면서 시장이 확대되고, 세계화의 흐름 속에서 스포츠 산업은 한국가를 넘어 전 세계적으로 확장된 것이다. 각종 스포츠는  방송중계권과 광고료 및 유니폼 판매 등 다양한 방면에서 프로 스포츠로서의 모습을 갖추고 있다. 인지도 있는 스포츠 선수들의 몸값은 천문학적인 숫자를 기록하고 있으며,해마다 조사하는 직업 선호도에서  청소년들이 희망하는 미래직업 가운데 상위를 차지한다.  스포츠가 단순히  즐거움과 쾌락을  제공하는 수준을 넘어 선수와 관중을 매개하는 구단과 매니저 등 훨씬 복잡한 구조로 존재하는 것이다.

둘째는 첨단기술의 발달과 더불어 스포츠 현장의 상황을 현장감을 최대로 끌어올려 안방까지 배달해 주는 생중계 확대 등도 이러한 인식을 공고히 하는 데 중요한 몫을 하고 있다.  경기장에 수십 대의 카메라가 설치되어 선수들의 움직임과 표정, 흐르는 땀방울까지도 섬세하게 포착해낸다. 아울러 선수의 모습을  확대하거나 느린 동작을 보여줌으로써 선수들의 뛰어난 기술을 정확하게 볼 수 있도록 해준다. 특히 프로야구의 경우에는 느린화면으로 보지 않는이상 확인할수없는  투수들의  공의 궤적이나 움직임을 화면으로 전달해 시청자들의 몰입도를 한층 높이고 있다. 또한 여러 대의 카메라를 동시에 활용해 공의 움직임과 선수의 움직임을 동시에 보여주는 것은 카메라 기법이 발달하기 이전에는 불가능했던 것들이다. 이처럼 기술의 발달은 스포츠 경기에 대한 대중의 이해와 집중도를 높여 더욱 수준 높은 스포츠 경기를 관람할 수 있는 배경이 됐다.

셋째는 스포츠는 공동체의 가치를 형성하는 데 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 이슈가 되는 국제경기에서는  평상시 발현되지 않던 애국심이나 공동체 인식이 경기를 통해 분출되어 전국민이 하나가 되는 현상도 나타나고 있다. 스포츠만이 할수 있는 정말 위대한 결과다  간혹 스포츠 민족주의처럼 부정적인 면이 있는것도 사실이다.  하지만 다른 한편으로는 스포츠를 통해 국가와 민족 간의 갈등이 상대적으로 완화되고 해소되는 역할도 분명이 있다고 말할 수 있다. 전쟁이라는 실제적인 폭력의 형태가 아니라, 일종의 가상 대리전 성격이 되어 갈등을 공식적으로 해소하는 장(場)으로서 스포츠 경기가 작동하는 것이다.

현실에서 스포츠는 또 다른 측면에서 공동체의 가치를 드러내고 있다. 즉 국가와 민족 개념의 해체 과정에서 애국심이나 민족주의와 같은 근본적인 방식의 공동체가 아니라, 계층이나 인종, 성별이나 세대 및 이데올로기 등 다양한 차이를 넘나드는 새로운 내용과 표현을 매개하는 역할로 스포츠가 중요해지고 있는 것이다. 그것은 같은 종목을 중심으로 펼쳐지는 취향의 공동체이기도 하고, 특정 선수를 중심으로 하는 팬덤(fandom) 공동체의 모습을 띄기도 한다. 이처럼 새로운 공동체의 등장은 스포츠의 성격의 변화와도 맞물려 있다. 스포츠는 과거처럼 개별 국가의 특정 종목을 중심으로 이뤄지는 것이 아니라 좀 더 포괄적이고 횡단적인 방식으로 다양한 사회와 집단, 영역에 걸쳐서 나타나고 있는 것이다. 그런 과정에서 오늘날 스포츠의 중요한 영역은 올림픽이나 월드컵과 같은 국제적인 대형 스포츠 행사를 들 수 있다.

동계와 하계로 나눠 치러지는 올림픽은 전 세계 대다수 국가들이 참가하는 명실 공히 ‘지구촌 축제’이며, 축구라는 단일 종목으로 세계를 하나로 묶는 영향력을 갖고 있는 월드컵은 예선을 거쳐 24개 본선 진출국이 우승을 다툰다. 이들 스포츠는 심화되어가는 상업화의 비판 속에서도 여전히 지구인이 함께 춤출 수 있는 장을 마련하고 있다는 점에서 긍정적 기능을 무시할 수 없다.
